Part of the Week: The Mighty Check Valve

Welcome to our new "Part of the Week" series! This week, we're shining the spotlight on a crucial component of your air compressor: the check valve.

What is a Check Valve?

A check valve, also known as a one-way valve or non-return valve, is a small but mighty device that plays a big role in your air compressor's functionality. Essentially, it's a valve that allows airflow in one direction while preventing it from flowing in the opposite direction. Think of it as a gatekeeper for your compressed air system!

This video helps explain the many different types of check valves and how to choose the correct one.

Why is it Important?

Check valves serve several important functions in an air compressor system:

  • Preventing Air Backflow:
  • When your compressor shuts off, a check valve ensures that compressed air doesn't flow back into the compressor's cylinder. This helps maintain pressure within the system and prevents damage to sensitive components.

  • Protecting the Motor:
  • By preventing backflow, a check valve also helps protect the compressor motor from damage caused by excess pressure.

  • Maintaining System Efficiency:
  • A properly functioning check valve ensures that air flows smoothly through your compressor system, maximizing efficiency and performance.

When to Replace Your Check Valve

Like all components, check valves can wear out over time. Signs that it may be time to replace your check valve include:

  • Air Leaks:
  • If you notice air leaking from your compressor when it's turned off, especially if air is leaking from the small pressure switch bleeder/unloader valve (in which a ¼” airline is attached), it could be a sign of a faulty check valve.

  • Decreased Performance:
  • A failing check valve can lead to reduced compressor efficiency and slower pressure build-up.

  • Excessive Cycling:
  • If your compressor is cycling on and off more frequently than usual, it could indicate a check valve problem.

With our wide range of products and expert customer service, we've got everything you need to keep your compressor in top condition. Here are three check valves we’d like to highlight:

1. For your Coleman Powermate B500B60V model compressor:

Air Compressor Check Valve 1/2" Compression x 1/2" MPT, CTD1212 #0E536A

This check valve is a ½” compression x ½” MPT check valve that is the most popular check valve we sell. Made of brass with a heavy-duty spring and diaphragm seal, it keeps air flowing into the tank when it should and seals it off to prevent air loss.

2. For your Emglo AM78HC4V compressor:

Check Valve 3/8" Compression x 1/2" MPT #1162F9

This check valve is a ⅜” compression x ½” MPT check valve with cold start valve. The cold start valve is a relief valve that stays open when the compressor starts to prevent any backpressure in the system that would keep the unit from easily starting.

3. For your California Air Tools 4620AC compressor:

Check Valve #01A490

This is a 3-way OEM check valve that fits various California Air Tools models. It has a large male NPT outlet port, a port for the exhaust hose, and a smaller male flared port for the unloader line.

Stay tuned for next week's "Part of the Week" feature, where we'll shine the spotlight on another essential component of your air compressor system. Until then, happy compressing!
